For a bit of paper business wisdom and inspiration, marketing applications, research and retrospective on paper as a media today, check out the free Life with Print booklet series by Sappi. Even if not right up to day (2005-2009) this definitely gives interesting insights.

Despite all predictions that the 21st century would see print swamped by the electronic media, today print continues to play a valuable role in our everyday lives and is more powerful than ever before,” (Sappi Fine Paper Europe CEO, Berry Wiersum)

The other day through the post came this mailer from GFSmith advertising the launch of a new micro-site, editionsfromgfsmith.com.

On this new website you will be able to buy (expansive) limited editions, high quality prints, from artists (Rankin, John Ross, Lee Funnell) that featured in GFSmith swatches, promotional books or marketing materials.

If you have a couple hundred pounds to spare, this is probably a good buy…

The other day through the post came a brilliant gift. The 2010 Everynow calendar by Munken, a division of Artic Paper, all wrapped in a cool package with a clever locking system.

This calendar features the Munken range of quality graphic uncoated paper (Lynx, Pure, Polar), all FSC+PEFC certified and produced at the Munkedal paper mill, Sweden.

The calendar booklet is a designed by Grow (Sweden), featuring 2 spot colours per month, a matt laminated cover with punched holes and blind embossing, all sewn in sections with exposed spine.

See also the Munken notebooks.

This is one of the most exciting texture I have felt so far. Mohair from Gmund, just has the most addictive texture a paper can have, its soft, silky, smooth, fluffy fabric like texture will wake up your senses. Named after the fabric of the same name, you will love the feel of this stock.

It prints beautifully in all major printing processes, comes in 10 different colours/embossings combinations, all in 430gsm. A truly amazing FSC paper, with the Gmund eco seal.

Colorplan from GFSmith is one of the most well know uncoated colour paper in the UK. It features an extensive collection of 56 colours, 8 weights and 25 embossings that will suite any application.

Not sure why the new swatch is missing the colour reference, but this is anyway one of the largest available range of uncoated colour paper, and it is now FSC certified.

(SEA Design usually designs the cool paper swatches, direct mail and other marketing materials for GFSmith)

A couple of new paper mills and merchants have been added to database, with some high profile German paper mills. Check out Clampitt paper, Neenah paper, Unisource, James Cropper, Römerturm and Gmund. Check back soon for some more detail review of the German Römerturm and Gmund paper mills/merchants.

I have heard about it the first time in a FontShop newsletter I think, and now came across a site actually using it. Typekit lets you use designer typeface online on your website, so you don’t have to stick to the classics Georgia or Verdana and others anymore!

It uses Javascript to substitute the fonts of your website. It still might not be the best solution but it seems to work pretty well, the colymba.com blog now uses Adelle by TypeTogether for its headers.

This is something that had to be done, re-design the paper mill/merchant listing page, in order to make it more user friendly. Including an expanded content area and logos.

Some new paper suppliers have also been added to the database: Domtar, Finch Paper, French Paper, Sheep Poo Paper, Smart Paper and Wausau Paper.

Having been dropped by Arjowiggins paper stocks promotions (since it seems they are taking over the distributor James McNaughton), I have been handed a promotional booklet for their digital paper range.

A cool little book, designed by Blast, printed by the renowned Team and featuring artwork by John Ross, Eboy, Frost, Jeremy Tankard and other. A perfect little coffee table booklet featuring about 8 different digital stocks like a citrus yellow, metallic, smooth, embossed or Skin which reminds me of Plike (distributed by GFSmith or Raleigh in Australia).

All papers are FSC, ISO 9001/14001 and of recycled grade.
