Liz Wolfe, from Toronto Canada, creates contemporary images, photographs, of a surreal world. Creating both beautiful and surprising compositions mixing angelic and unexpected, somewhat dark, objects together in colourful photographs.
A unique vision from a talented photographer with maybe a touch of humour.

The work of Feric Feng is a mix of organic, mechanical fantasy technical animation. The stunning line art illustrations/concept designs result in magical traditional 2D or 3D animations and films, blending the ‘opposites’, East & West, organic & mechanical, past & future. As an artist he likes the idea of infinite evolution and transcribe it in surreal magical environments.
Working as a concept artist/design and animator, Feng Feric works as creative director at The Frank Barton Company, and has also released a couple of animation films, “Inside Out”, “Fevolution” and soon “Roda”.
Check out the shop.

This Summer/Autumn depending where you live is screening “The Other Guys” (see trailer below), a movie by Adam McKay. One thing I like on top of a good movie, are good title sequences and this is no exception.
As well as being nicely designed, the animated infographics ‘educates’ and complement the movie’s story line and message. Rolling through various financial hiccups, indiscretions (i.e. Madoff, AIG) and social differences creating a good thought provoking conclusion to the film.
The title sequence itself was designed/created by the US studio Picture Mill, a visual agency specialised in films, television and advertising.
(The Other Guys is a Sony Pictures Film, End Title Sequence still from Picture Mill)

Cartiere del Garda, part of the Lecta group, has been promoting the paper industrial excellence and development with respect to the environment.
As a celebration, a 3 years design/photography project entitled A Better Project saw the light. From 2007 to 2009, 3×10 photographers from around the world have been briefed to document “the experience of one man’s spare time”, “their personal view of the modern city” and to report on companies/entrepreneurs “who have distinguished themselves thanks to a work policy which embraced sustainability, creativity and solidarity”.
The result is a 3 books set, 300x300mm hard back, each featuring the photographic work on the high-quality paper range from Cartiere del Garda.
A Better Time, A Better City & A Better Business.
The first 2 using the GardaPat 13 KIARA 150gsm, while “A Better Business” feature the entire “Excellent Collection” of papers (GardaMatt Art, GardaGloss Art, GardaCover Hi-Fi, GardaPat 13 KLASSICA & GardaPat 13 KIARA), with each paper stock match to specific photographs that match best the surface to enhance the visual impact.
About Cartiere del Garda:
“A business that started 50 years ago with one production line, an entrepreneur, a hundred collaborators and a great deal of good will, Cartiere del Garda has become one of the most modern and respected paper mills producing woodfree coated products in Italy, and continues to build on its time-honoured ethos; the respect for the environment and consideration of the community.”
The 3 books were directed and designed by the Italian, Milano based design agency, Imille.

Found this pretty interesting book a couple of months back while travelling in France. Titled Detail in Typography (Le Détail en Typography), this book deals with ‘everything’ micro-typography and working with the column of text, enhancing its readability and legibility, all in a very approachable and concise manner.
This great edition – first published in 1987 -reminds me in some ways to Robert Bringhurst‘s The Element of Typographic Style, but in a more straight to the point way (and maybe less in depth).
Sample chapters include the reading process, line composition and column type setting; all chapter and reflections illustrated with rich examples.
Written and designed by Jost Hochuli (graphic designer/typographer from the “modern Swiss typography”), Detail in Typography is available from Hyphen Press, Amazon, Typotheque and many other retailer and in various languages.

Receive the other day the captivating INSPIRE Magazine (#35) from Iggesung Paperboard, paper merchant and mill, manufacturer of Invercote and Incada paperboards. The cover features a cool printing process, cold foil. It achieves similar result than hot foil, but has the advantage to be applied in-line (like Aqueous Coating) on the offset press. This offers greater flexibility and opportunity for overprinting and maybe some cost saving.

I am a big fan of printing processes and experimenting with them, I’ve done research on their associated psychological response and I believe each process should be chosen in response to the brief.
With the same concept, Underware, the design collective author of fabulous typefaces, managed to ‘manufacture’ blood offset ink. For the sampler of their typeface Fakir, a book on the theme of voluntary suffering, The book of war, written byRuud Linssen, will be printed with the author’s blood.
A brilliant, concept and execution!
